Jealous

Ash didn't mean to follow them to lunch. Much. When he realized that he was in the same restaurant as Brendan and his "partner," he managed to find a table where he could see them, but they couldn't see him.

As Brendan seated Freya, Ash had to wonder what sorts of changes being in the city had wrought on Brendan. Well, his predilection for getting involved with his partners hadn't changed, though the sex of that partner had.

Another man joined them - he was casually dressed and had longish hair. When she saw him, Freya jumped up and hugged him. Okay, Ash thought. Freya's boyfriend. What did that make Brendan? Friend of the couple? One corner of a triangle? When the shaggy-haired guy stepped back from Freya and put a hand on the back of Brendan's neck to pull him in for a quick kiss - the kind of kiss that Ash gave his wife when he left the house - he got it.

The waiter came to his table and Ash ordered a sandwich and iced tea. At the other table, he could see Brendan and the other guy laughing and leaning their heads together intimately. Freya was gone.

"Here," Freya said, appearing out of nowhere with a white bag and a Styrofoam cup in her hands. She set them on the table. "I paid for your lunch. It's 'to go.' Have a nice afternoon."

She crossed her arms and waited until he stood and picked up the bag. He glanced back at Brendan's table, but she took a step to the side to block his view. "Goodbye," Freya said. "See you around. Or not."
